It’s time to go back to where it all began… Heavy metal! So raise your horns, bang your head and rock out to My Top 5 Heavy Metal Bands!
5)Judas Priest -First on the list we have the leather clad metal veterans. It is hard to think that Judas Priest struggled in the beginning as they have become such a staple in the metal world. From their heavy metal beginnings to the later speed metal material, Judas Priest know how to rock and continue to do so to this very day. This list wouldn’t feel complete without mentioning these guys.
4)Steel Panther – Serious or not. It doesn’t matter these guys know how to have a bloody good time. Stereotypical 80s glam on steroids is the best way to describe this band. Steel Panther may have over exaggerated on stage personas and have a comedy lean to them, but that hasn’t stopped them from producing seriously good heavy metal music. You can’t deny their abilities, as behind the ‘parody’ is a group of guys who know how to play, write a decent song and have such an onstage presences that it’s hard to take your eyes off them. Even when tits are being exposed left, right and centre. It takes some skill to pull off what Steel Panther do. Death to all but metal!
3)Ghost – The Swedish heavy metal band formed back in 2008. Now don’t let the hooded instrumentalists and anti-Pope vocalist Papa Emeritus fool you, the music itself isn’t that heavy. You get a unique blend of sinister riffs, haunting choir like chants and haunting harmonies. Ghost have an imposing image and their satanic view may put a lot of people off, but remove this and you still have an awe inspiring metal band that know how to craft incredible music.
2)Iron Maiden – Emerging at the start of the new wave of British metal, Iron Maiden are one of the biggest metal bands of all time. They have had successes in nearly every single country, toured across all continents and are known by anyone who is a fan of rock or metal. Even though I don’t rate their latest material that favourably there is no denying that there is rarely a stain on this bands back catalogue. Their riffs are so recognisable by tone and style, lyrics are incredibly well written and the legend that is Steve Harris is arguably one of the finest bass players to have lived.
1)Black Sabbath – What were you expecting? The godfathers of metal, the pioneers of heaviness! Black Sabbath have given birth to arguable all forms of metal and may not seem controversial in todays music scene, but back in the late 60s… There was no one giving heart attacks to old people, religious types and people in power quite like Ozzy, Tony and Geezer. Influencing nearly every band that followed suit in some form or another we can all thank Black Sabbath for creating such an impactful legacy. Say it with me, thank you Sabbath for metal.
Other bands to look out for:
Accept, Saxon, Quiet Riot, Anvil, Airbourne, Warlock, King Diamond, Manowar, Dio, W.A.S.P, Ozzy Osbourne, Angel Witch, Diamond Head, Def Leppard, Motörhead
